Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) – An autonomous underwater vehicle is a underwater robot that performs a function without requiring input from an operator.

AUVs are part of a larger group of undersea systems known as unmanned underwater vehicles, including non-autonomous remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs)

ROVs are controlled and powered from the surface by an operator/pilot via an umbilical or using remote control.

UUV – Military AUVs are referred to as unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs).
